First 6-star Green Building uses our rails
About this page
Council House 2, the new Melbourne City Council Building next to the Town Hall in Little Collins St, has chosen our parking rails for their bike parking
CH2 is the first building in Australia to be awarded the Green Building Council's 6 star award for design. The Age reports (6 May 2006) that the building is 'set for 6 stars for construction and fit out'. The six-star rating indicates the Green Building Council has awarded the building 'World Leadership' status.
Bicycle Victoria has joined the Green Building Council and we will be promoting our parking solutions to those in the building industry interested in improving their star rating.
The rating measures a number of factors including 'the reduction of demand for individual cars by both discouraging car commuting and encouraging use of alternative transportation.'
The floor plan of the building includes parking for 21 car spaces and 65 bike rails. The Ned Kellys will be mounted on the perimeter wall but will not be in a cage.
Positives about the design include a clothes locker room next to the rails and easy access to the parking from the ramp up from the street.
Our parking handbook describes the features of a 'perfect' bike park.
It will be interesting to see how the bike parking at CH2 evolves as it is used. The users may wish to cage off the parking and, if it is really popular, the bike parking may displace some of the car parking, further raising the building's rating.
