About this page

Tuesday 4 March 2008 is the date for Australia's biggest visual bike count. There are 13 Councils taking part.

Free t-shirt for all Super Tuesday volunteers

Feb 08 There are still locations to cover if you would like to be part of the big day. The cut off date for registration has been extended until 5pm on Wednesday 20 February. If you'd like to be a part of Super Tuesday 2008 then please complete this short questionnaire.

Jan 08 Bicycle Victoria is looking for bike counters to take part in Super Tuesday 2008 and help make the case for better bike facilities. (Click here for more information on Super Tuesday 2007). Count volunteers can nominate a recognised community bike riding organisation, triathlon club or service club to receive $50 as a reward for their efforts.

Counters will need to be available from 7am-9am on the morning of Tuesday 4 March. We are still finalising a list of sites but will endeavour to allocate you a site that is either near your home or workplace/uni etc.

Currently 13 Councils have confirmed they will be taking part in Super Tuesday 2008 and we are working to get more including regional centres. Please see the list on the right hand side of this page.

You can also encourage your Council to take part by emailing them. Get your Council email address (and cc your Mayor) from here. If you would like to be involved but are not sure of who your local community bike riding organisation is you can find them here.

Super Tuesday 2008

Jan 08 It's on again! Super Tuesday 2008 will be Tuesday March 4.

After the success of the inaugural ‘Super Tuesday’ where over 100 BUG and Club members spread across the Cities of Melbourne, Yarra, Port Phillip and Stonnington area captured where riders were going in the AM peak, Bicycle Victoria will be once again coordinating Australia’s largest ever bike count in 2008.

The figures collated as a result of Super Tuesday helped the Councils involved to better understand rider movements and prioritise routes for improvement. It also assisted the Inner Melbourne Action Plan (IMAP) Bike network review and assisted the City of Melbourne in the development of the Melbourne Bicycle Account, as well as being the basis for Lord Mayor John So pushing for more bike lanes in the City of Melbourne.

After the four IMAP councils led the way in 2007 Bicycle Victoria is looking forward to casting the net further in 2008. Many other Councils have already stated their intent to be included

We will be putting out the call for people to help count in the new year so click on 'Email me updates' above.

More people riding more often!

Apr 07 The Super Tuesday results are now available for you to study (see link on right). We have presented them in a detailed map, which shows compares rider numbers on different routes.

Highlights include:

Mar 07 The results are in. Thanks to a superb effort by 90+ people, mainly from the BUG and Club community of Melbourne. We hope to have the results available soon (click 'Email me updates', right to be notified).

Feb 07 The Inner Melbourne Action Group (IMAP) have asked us help them get a better understanding where riders go and where the priorities lie in their bike network.

If you would like to help provide evidence of the current bike riding boom please register here.

If you haven't done it before, counting is a lot of fun and these days you will be kept busy marking your sheet!

Once you have registered, a site will be allocated to you and we will send you an information pack and a unique, once only, limited edition Super Tuesday t-shirt to wear on the day (and after).

The 90 sites are in City of Melbourne, Yarra, Port Phillip and Stonnington (west of Kooyong Rd).

What we are trying to do

By establishing a regular and consistent measure of bike riding we can show how many people are riding and where they are riding. This strengthens the case for further investment in better bicycle facilities.

The Super Tuesday system makes it easy for local governments to run a high quality survey. It also supports local bike groups.

Super Tuesday complements in-path loops and on-road loop counters. Unlike loops, the ST volunteer reports on every movement through an intersection. There are also many more ST locations than loops.

Super Tuesday complements the census. This national survey asks everyone in Australia but it only asks about a journey to work not a journey to the shops or school. Census results don't show the popular routes. The census is run in winter and only every five years.
