In some scenarios some riders may feel the need for a safer space to ride along a road than on road lanes can offer. An new treatment may offer a viable solution.
Vicroads recently implemented a new design in the City of Casey along the Berwick-Cranbourne Road.
This design combines a behind-curb path where pedestrian use is likely to be low with smooth transitions on and off the road where width allows.
Speed differencial and traffic volume, combined with the the path being an attractive option to riders lacking confidence to mix it with heavy traffic means this design is a useful tool to help make arterial roads a rideable option to a wider audience of riders.
We believe this design could be further enhanced by the use of Green Lanes to assist in giving a clear percetion ofcontinuity to all road users, particularly at the likely conflict points such as slip lanes and entry/exit points. We have altered to thred the image to show how we would like to see it look.
