Bushfire recovery funds to help develop the rail trail.
July 07 The State Government has committed over $100,000 to help develop the Rushworth to Murchison Rail Trail. This is a great boost to the project, which is likely to use the funds restoring a wooden railway bridge (pictured right).
The Rushworth to Murchison Rail Trail has the potential to become a prized local tourism and recreation asset.
Bicycle Victoria is supportive of moves to find a link for the trail into the major population centre of Shepparton, which could make the trail a successful tourism trail delivering the significant benefits of major rail trails.
Background
There is local interest in converting the old railway line between Rushworth and Murchison in northern Victoria to a rail trail. The old line ran for 19km between the two towns.
Already work has been done on the Rushworth Deep Lead railway reserve area with landscaping and a short section of sealed trail constructed. For photos and more information see Railtrails Australia website (right).
