Mountain bike access in national parks

Bicycle Victoria is working with Mountain Bike Australia to improve access for mountain biking
Bicycle Victoria is working with Mountain Bike Australia (MTBA) to improve access for mountain biking.
In May 2003 the two organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding tosupport and promote responsible mountain bike use and the International Mountain Bike Association’s rules of the trail.
We will work together:
- to get more trails available for mountain biking throughout Victoria that will suit a range of potential riders
- on agreed priority projects to establish successful trails available to mountain biking that show an example for future trails.
We won't try and do everything together but will work together more intensively on significant and important projects that we agree mean a lot to both of us. We will review our joint priorities regularly. The MOU can be viewed here (PDF 34KB).
MTBA signs agreement with Parks Victoria
In June 2003 a landmark Memorandum of Cooperation was signed by both MTBA and Parks Victoria. To our knowledge this is the first statement of cooperation made between a State land managing agency and a MTB organisation in Australia.
The document establishes a formal relationship with Parks Victoria and recognises recreational mountain bike riding as a legitimate activity on land managed by Parks Victoria.
We believe that mountain bikes should be allowed in national parks unless there is reason to exclude them. Reasons may include:
- Erodable soils on steep slopes
- Preservation of remote wilderness areas - what may take 2-3 days walking could be done as a day-trip on a MTB, eliminating its 'remoteness'
- High volume of walking traffic; e.g. Sealers Cove walk on Wilsons Prom.
Generally the impact of mountain bikes is less due to wheels and less time spent on trail (less litter, equipment, and reduced overnight stays). Management and 4WD tracks should be accessilbe for MTBs.
There is also a demand for 'singletrack' or more technical trails for mountain biking.
