Derrimut Road gets shared path
7 October 2008. The $14.7 million Derrimut Road upgrade is providing a new shared off-road path for cyclists and pedestrians in this busy location.
Work is expected to be finished this month, ahead of the original 2009 completion date.
Once completed, the project will extend the divided four-lane route north from Hogans Road to Sayers Road, improving safety and easing congestion.
Derrimut Road is a major north-south route in a key residential area within the City of Wyndham. The project will improve access to nearby community locations including the Hogans Corner Shopping Centre, St James the Apostle Primary School and the Grange College.
As well as the shared path, the road is being improvede for public tranport use and 23,000 plants will improve amenity for path users.
Derrimut Road bike path project has been a Bicyle Victoria priority since February 2003 (see below).
Draft Bike Strategy Due
Feb 03 Council's draft bicycle strategy should be ready shortly. It will focus on the Federation Trail, Werribee township and shared paths. Bicycle Victoria is working with council to ensure high priority projects are dealt with including connections to the Federation Trail and cycling routes through and into Werribee.
Top priorities included Duncan's Rd, the Princes Hwy and connecting the Werribee River Trail into town.
With support from Bicycle Victoria, Russell Freemantle of Wyndham BUG has been representing cycling interests in the municipality. His biggest success so far is getting the speed limit on Sayers reduced from 80 to 70 km/h.
Bicycle projects that we consider to be high priority include:
- Leakes Rd
- Sayers Rd
- Derrimut Rd
- Fitgerald Rd
- Old Geelong Rd.
