The Car Guys Like their bikes

22-05-08. Cycling's role in boosting tourism in regional Australia has been confirmed again -- this time from a surprising source.

Online polling at the RACV website, intended to discover the best tourism experiences in Victoria, has again highlighted the popularity of cycling touring in the bush.

When checked this week the poll placed three cycling attractions in the leading group, including one in the top ten.

Listed at 31 was the Murray to Mountain Rail Trail, at 15 was the East Gippsland Tail Trail, and topping out at seven was the Great Victorian Bike Ride, which rated higher than the Phillip Island Penguin Parade, the Yarra Valley wineries and Sovereign Hill Historical Park.

See the poll. (Note that the ratings can move around, as votes come in).

The results, coming as they do from a poll conducted by a motoring organisation, reinforce the long standing view of Bicycle Victoria that cycle touring, as it continues to grow in popularity, will have a notable economic impact in regional Victoria.

The rail trails, which we have struggled so strenuously to expand and develop, are proving a winner. And the Great Victorian Bike Ride is now fully embedded in the public consciousness as the best way to experience the Victorian countryside.
