This section contains the campaigns to improve, connect and extend the trails and paths in and around metro Melbourne.

East: Anniversary Outer Circle Trail
This popular trail in Boroondara provides a north-south link through the municipality. It connects to the Main Yarra Trail (Mel Ref 45 E2) in the north, and the Gardiners Creek Trail (69 B2) in the south.

East: Burwood to Mitcham Pipe Reserve
The latest developments and improvements on the trail along the Mitcham-Notting Hill Transfer Main water line.

East: Dandenong Creek Trail
The Dandenong Creek Trail begins in Kilsyth (Melway Ref 65 G4) and continues 44 km south west through to Patterson Lakes (97 C7).

East: Diamond Creek Trail
The Diamond Creek Trail is 12 kilometres long and links Diamond Creek with the Main Yarra Trail. It starts at Nillumbik Park (Melway Ref 12 A5) and joins the Main Yarra Trail in Candlebark Park (Melway Ref 21 H12).

East: Eastern Rail Line Trail - Mitcham to Yarra River

East: EastLink Trail
As part of the $2.5 billion EastLink project to link Melbourne's eastern suburbs with Frankston, 36km of new shared paths and 20km of links to existing paths were promised. And now . . . delivered.

East: Gardiners Creek Trail
This route starts at the Main Yarra Trail in Toorak, near St Kevin's College (Melway Ref 59 A1), and follows Gardiners Creek through Glen Iris, Malvern, Burwood, Ashwood, Box Hill and ends near the Blackburn Lake Sanctuary (Melway Ref 47 K12).

East: Lilydale - Yarra Glen Rail Corridor
The Lilydale-Healesville Rail Corridor was subject to a feasibility study in 2006 to consider options for future use. There has yet to be any progress over the last on developing the shared use trail included as part of this study.

East: Mullum Mullum Path
The Mullum Mullum Creek Path runs from Croydon to the Yarra River in Templestowe

East: Plenty River Trail
The Plenty River Trail links Greensborough to the Main Yarra Trail, Melbourne's CBD and the Metropolitan Trail Network.

East: Yarra Trail
The Main Yarra Trail starts in Templestowe at the Mullum Mullum Creek (Melway 22 B11) and follows Melbourne's best-known waterway all the way to Southbank in the city.

East: Yarra Trail (Gipps St to Walmer St)
The City of Yarra is investigating an alternative alignment of the Main Yarra trail which would involve continuing the trail on the Abbotsford side around the back of the CUB brewery eliminating the Gipps St steps and the steep climb on the Boroondara side of the river.

Inner: Docklands
A major part of inner Melbourne and the bicycle network with the Footscray Rd path and Moonooe Ponds Creek path feeding thousands of riders every day onto the Capital City Trail through Docklands to the CBD and the Main Yarra Trail

Inner: Manningham St Bridge, Parkville
This bridge will remove a dozen steps from the Capital City Trail between the Moonee Ponds Creek and the Zoo, and allow riders to cross above a busy road. It will be a significant enhancement to the Trail which is used by commuters and recreational riders

Inner: Monash-CityLink-West Gate Upgrade
Bicycle Victoria has been working with Transurban, VicRoads and the Monash Alliance to minimise the impact of Monash-CityLink-West Gate Upgrade project on riders.

Inner: NorthBank of the Yarra
Northbank refers to the section of the Yarra Trail on the north side of the river from Punt Road (City of Melbourne boundary) to the Eel Trap Bridge at the South end of Docklands.

Inner: Rushall Precinct
The Rushall Station precinct defines a complex junction in the bike network. The triangle-shaped precinct is where the Capital City Trail & Merri Creek Trail meets the St Georges Rd Path & on-road route, and the Westgarth St & Heidelberg Rd routes. A local route connects to the north end of the Napier St route.

North: Craigieburn Bypass Path

North: Darebin Creek Trail
The Darebin Creek runs from the north of Melbourne to the Ring Road in Bundoora (outer section). From there the creek flows south past La Trobe University to join the Yarra in Alphington (inner section). The Darebin Creek Trail is not yet continuous - see box opposite.

North: Greensborough Bypass Path
In 2006 Vicroads completed the Greensborough Bypass between the Ring Road and Diamond Creek Rd. This connects up to the Ring Rd Path and will connect to the Main Yarra Trail via the Path being constructed along Greensborough Rd and the River Gum Walk path

North: Merri Creek Trail
The Merri Creek Trail commences at Dights Falls where it joins the Main Yarra Trail (Melway 44 F3) and follows the Merri Creek to Moomba Park where it joins the Western Ring Rd path (Melway 7 J11). It is approximately 25km in length.

North: River Gum Walk
The River Gum Walk shared path provides a connection from Lower Plenty Rd (Melway 20 D11) to the Main Yarra Trail (Melway 32 E3)

North: Steele Creek Path
Steele Creek runs from the southern boundary of Melbourne Airport south to the Maribyrnong River.

North: Upfield Bike Path
The Upfield Bike Path commences near the Flemington Bridge railway station (Melway Ref 2A D1) where it joins the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail and follows the Upfield railway line for 6km. It ends at Boundary Rd Merlynston (Melway Ref 17 G6) near Merlynston Station.

Parks and Gardens in the City of Melbourne
This section covers the issue of bike riding in areas defined by the City of Melbourne as Parks and Gardens.

South: Bay Trail (Port Melbourne to Frankston)
This section of the Bay Trail starts at Fishermens Bend at Westgate Park and carries all the way through to Frankston.

South: Bay Trail Patterson River to Humphries Road
This is the section of the Bay Trail that is in the City of Frankston.

South: Elster Creek / Elwood Canal Shared Path

South: Monash Fwy Hallam Bypass
Bicycle Victoria pushed hard for a shared path connection as part of the project

West: Bay Trail West
The Bay Trail when completed will run from the National Park at Point Nepean on the east side of Port Phillip Bay to the Werribee River in the west. The western section starts at the Yarra and follows the Bay to Williamstown and then south and west towards the Werribee River.

West: Federation Trail
The campaign focus is now on the section east from Millers Road to the Yarra in Spotswood.

West: Kororoit Creek Path
A key link in the west runs between the Western Ring Rd path and the Bay Trail. Two major gaps are holding back local commuter and recreational riding in the area. The gap north of the Federation Trail is now funded but the southern gap towards the Bay Trail is disrupting what should be a great circuit.

West: Maribyrnong River Trail - updates
The trail starts outside Scienceworks in Spotswood (where it intersects with Bay Trail West) and follows the Maribyrnong River north to Brimbank Park in Keilor.

West: Regional Rail Link - Outer
The State Government has announced the Regional rail link between Werribee and Sunshine rail Corridor is proceeding. The plans include a path along both sides of the corridor

West: Skeleton Creek Trail

West: Werribee River Trail
A trail along the Werribee River, taking in Werribee Mansion and providing an access route for local rides to work and school

West: Western Ring Road Path
The Western Ring Road Path begins at the end of the Merri Creek Trail (Mel Ref 7 J11) and connects to the Federation Trail in Laverton (Mel Ref 40 D11)

Trail Strategies and Commitments

Most of these trails are on the Metropolitan Trail Network and are eligible for support from Parks Victoria.

Some are local trails that are the sole responsibilty of local government.

The State Department of Sport & Recreation has funded some trail upgrades.

The Federal Government funded trail works in 2009 as part of the economic stimulus package.
