2008 Light Test

About this page

This year we recommend the Basta Polaris BA3 front light and the Tioga “600” TCL 54 rear light.

The 2008 light test

Our latest test revealed that these two lights are the best value:

Front: Basta Polaris BA3 $39.95
Rear: Tioga “600” TCL 54 $19.95

These lights are significantly better than the ones we tested two years ago.

We strongly recommend you buy new lights if your lights are more than two years old.

The lighting test

Bicycle Victoria has tested 29 popular bike lights in order to recommend the best value lights to people who ride their bikes at night.

Our test panel included representatives from the Ride to Work program, RACV, Choice Magazine, bicycle retailers, user groups, clubs, the Victoria Police and VicRoads. Each light was viewed from in front from the regulation distance of 200m and then from the side at 50m. Each tester rated the lights and then the scores were consolidated.

‘The test and the recommendations are a vital part of our campaign to get riders to use lights at night’ Harry Barber said. ‘People who ride without lights tell us they don’t know which light to buy. Well now they do.’

Bicycle Victoria Members read the detailed results of our lights test in the April edition of Ride On magazine. If you would like a free  back issue of Ride On please click here.
