National Light Up! 2008
About this page
This is the fourth year of the Light Up! campaign. We aim to increase the proportion of riders riding at night with compliant lights. Prompt two battery changes each year by regular riders; one at the end of daylight saving and one on the shortest day. Identify the best value lights on the market
National Light Up! 2008
The end of daylight saving means bike commuters will now be riding home in the dark. It is time to make sure you have effective lights on your bike.

2008 End of Daylight Saving Roadside Survey
In the week following daylight saving we conducted roadside surveys in Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne. We found 35% of riders without proper lights.
2008 Light Test
This year we recommend the Basta Polaris BA3 front light and the Tioga “600” TCL 54 rear light.
Lights - education and enforcement
In Victoria the education and enforcement plans are encapsulated in Arrive Alive.
Lights - the penalties
The rules are the same across Australia but the penalties vary. Bicycle Victoria supports the higher penalties.
Lights - the rules
Road Rule 259: Riding at night "The rider of a bicycle must not ride at night, or in hazardous weather conditions causing reduced visibility, unless the bicycle, or the rider, displays— (a) a flashing or steady white light that is clearly visible for at least 200 metres from the front of the bicycle; and (b) a flashing or steady red light that is clearly visible for at least 200 metres from the rear of the bicycle; and (c) a red reflector that is clearly visible for at least 50 metres from the rear of the bicycle when light is projected onto it by a vehicle’s headlight on low-beam. (National road rules.)
National Light Up! Campaign Record
Currently there are an unacceptable number of riders riding at night without lights. With our partners around Australia, Bicycle Victoria is in the fourth year of our Light Up! campaign. We aim to increase the number of riders riding at night with compliant lights and to prompt two battery changes each year by regular riders; one at the end of daylight saving and one on the shortest day. This page summarises the initiatives in the campaign so far.
