Bike parking at work

You might be lucky enough to work for a business that provides a bike cage for staff, usually requiring a key of swipe-card to access.

If not, you could lobby your employer to install bike parking. You may be able to get access to a storeroom or shed to store your bike if few people cycle to work. Remember, even in a cage or secure room, always lock your bike.

To view information on the types of bike parking rails that Bicycle Victoria can supply and install, see "The Bicycle Parking Experts".

Bike parking in Melbourne's CBD

Bike parking is available in some off-street car parking garages in the CBD. The photo (left) shows free bike parking available at City Square Parking off Flinders Lane, which is in front of the parking attendant's booth.

We would like to see a secure public bike parking station in the city which not only offers secure bike parking but also lockers, showers, and possibly bike repairs and service.

There has been some preliminary investigation but there are a number of issues such as where to locate it, how to manage it and how to make it viable.

City of Melbourne has put aside $200,000 in its 2004/05 budget for a bicycle shed on Swanston St opposite the City Baths which will hold approximately 150 bikes.

Locking your bike securely

When using public parking rails or locking your bike in a cage, it is still important to lock your bike properly, as even cages can be broken into.

A U-lock offers greater security than a cable or padlock and chain, which can be easily cut. Make sure your frame is locked to the rail and, if possible, also fit the U-lock through one of your wheels.

A cable lock can be used in conjunction with a U-lock to lock the wheels to the frame or parking rail. For more information on locking your bike, click here.
