Green Travel Plans can be developed by employers to provide extra encouragement for staff to cycle.
Some of the benefits Green Travel Plans provide to staff who choose to cycle to work are:
- Easy access to secure, high profile bike racks
- Shower and locker facilities for staff cyclists
- Interest free loans to any staff wishing to purchase a bicycle
- Training sessions for staff who cycle
- A "fleet" of bicycles for use by all staff to attend nearby meetings
- An extra two days a year annual leave for people who cycle or walk to work regularly. This makes organisational sense as cyclists are often healthier, more productive and take less sick leave.
There are several councils in Melbourne who have adopted Green Travel Plans for staff but this has been done in conjunction with the development of a bicycle network within their municipality.
It is important that Councils develop more on-road bike lanes and off-road paths for cyclists as part of a connected network of bike routes to make cycling a viable transport option.
TravelSmart Workplaces
TravelSmart Workplaces is a state government program that helps employers reduce the financial and environmental impacts of how their staff travel to, from and for work.
It does this by helping employers develop and implement a green transport plan, which includes site specific actions that will encourage the use of more sustainable transport modes. Such actions can range from participating in Ride to Work Day™ to setting up a workplace carpool program.
The green transport plan is specific to your workplace and tailored to its location and needs. TravelSmart provides advice and assistance when your workplace is implementing the green transport plan actions.
To monitor the results, TravelSmart will continue to conduct staff travel surveys, usually on an annual basis.
Participation in the program is free. To get involved, contact TravelSmart on 9655 6227 or email travelsmart@doi.vic.gov.au.
