Bicycle Victoria is developing a prototype for secure bicycle cages

Cages can be installed at train stations, workplaces, schools and universities through out Australia. One cage can accommodate several bikes, offering both security and protection from the elements.

Whereas only one person has access to an individual locker, several people can have access to a space in a secure cage.

How would a cage be secure?

People have to register to use the cage just as with bike lockers, these people would be given access to the cage either with a swipe card or a PIN number (these could be changed periodically, with the registered users being informed).

How many bikes can a bike cage accommodate?

A bike cage could accommodate as many or as few bikes depending on the number of parking rails installed inside the cage. In our prototype we have allowed for ten bikes to be accommodated for.

However as the spaces are not in demand 24 hours per day, more than 20 people could be given access to use the facility, making the facility accessible to more patrons.

Why do we like bike cages?

Bicycle Victoria likes bike cages because they offer a secure, safe and protected environment for people to leave their bikes. We know that a lack of end of trip facilities, which includes secure bike parking, deters people from riding more often.

Unlike bike lockers, bike cages can accommodate several bikes allowing for more than one person to use the facility.

Bike cages are designed so that more people have access to the cage than the number of bikes the cage can accommodate. In other words, if a bike cage at South Yarra Train Station has room for 20 bikes and only 20 people had keys to the cage then it would be very unlikely that all 20 spaces would be occupied at one time as people travel at different times and so on.

Whereas if 25 people had access to the facility it would still be unlikely that the 20 bike spaces would be occupied at any one time, however an extra 5 people can use the facility.
