The best way to carry your bike will depend on what sort of car you have, how many bikes you want to carry and how often.

Car bike rackThere are four main options:

  • bike beaks, which fit on a tow bar

  • roof racks

  • strap-on racks, on the back of your car

  • floor mounts for utes, trucks and wagons.

For safety reasons, stoplights, tail lights and vehicle indicators must not be obscured by the rack or bicycles and make sure the the rack and its attachment to the vehicle (usually the tow bar) are strong enough to carry the bicycle(s).

Bike rack number plates

The numbers and letters on your vehicle's number plate must be clearly visible from a distance of 20 metres. If you have a bike rack fitted to your vehicle and it obscures the rear number plate you can either:

A protective trim to cover the sharp edges of the number plate can also be purchased from VicRoads for $3.10 each (price subject to change so check the VicRoads website.)
