Share the Road is a community road safety campaign to help drivers and cyclists use the road cooperatively.

The campaign was initiated by the Victorian Bicycle Advisory Council in 2004 and is sponsored by member organisations including Bicycle Victoria, Cycling Promotion Fund, Retail Cycle Traders Association, RACV, Victoria Police and VicRoads.

So what does it mean to Share the Road?

First and foremost, it’s about reinforcing the fact that cyclists are legitimate road users with rights and responsibilities.Cyclists are asked to help promote Share the Road by doing their best to raise the profile of responsible bike commuting.

The Share the Road campaign aims to:

Brochures

Car door and mirror stickers

If you're a regular rider, chances are you've been car-doored, or you know someone who has. Around 10% of reported cyclist casualties in Victoria occur when motorists or their passengers open car doors into the path of cyclists.

One of the first initiatives in the Share the Road campaign is a sticker for car door windows, rear and side mirrors. The double-sided sticker is designed to work as a prompt for car drivers at the moment they open their door.

It also works as a declaration: 'I'm doing my best to share the road'.

The transparent window stickers serve as additional reminders.

To show your support for the Share the Road campaign, order some of these stickers for your own car, for your car fleet at work or for friends' cars. Contact the VicRoads bookshop: 60 Denmark Street, Kew, ph 9854 2782.

More initiatives to come

We’re asking all commuter cyclists and Bicycle Victoria Members to help spread the message. Stay tuned for other ways you can actively help us get the message out.

The Share the Road campaign team is planning a series of initiatives targeting specific aspects of road behaviour over the next few years. Brochures don’t change the world, but people do!
