Danish Dreams on Wheels

The brilliant exhibition of Danish cycling culture hits Melbourne, opening at the Federation Square Atrium on August 12. It is a must see.

July 31 2008. Nothing like the Dreams on Wheels exhibition has been seen in Melbourne before.  A showcase of Danish cycling culture and innovative Danish bicycle design, this brilliant exhibition forces us to reimagine Melbourne in the context of 'cyclocentric' Denmark.

Denmark has developed 'cyclocentric' thinking in its approach to urban development, aiming to stimulate sustainable civic behaviour. Promoting  cycling in the broader cultural context, the exhibition displays Danish urban cityscapes alongside urban visions for Australia by the Danish architect, Jan Gehl.

A highlight of the exhibition is the exposure to the Danish bike design aesthetic -- on display are splendid designs including the Christiania bike, the LeitraVelomobile, Biomega designer bikes, the unique Mountain Goat, and ultimate classics from Velorbis.

Also on display are Copenhagen City Bikes, bicycles that are identical to those used in the Danish free bicycle program currently being adopted in Paris and considered for introduction in Australia.

Filmmaker and photographer Mikael Colville-Andersen, famous for his Copenhagen Cycle Chic blog, contributes to the exhibition with a number of photographs from his ongoing series documenting Copenhagen's bike culture.

The curator of Dreams on Wheels is Thomas Ermacora, founder of Etikstudio. The exhibition has previously been shown at the Danish House in Paris, the Danish Design Centre in Copenhagen, the Harbour front Centre in Toronto, and in Sydney.

Be quick, as the exhibition is only here for a short time.
