Folding bikes on public transport in Victoria

We believe all these bikes will comply with the Victorian public transport guidelines (which have yet to be confirmed). The guidelines will define which folding bikes can be taken on buses and trams.

Folding bikes differ in their ride-ability, weight, carry-ability and fold-ability.

Ticket and ride

As of 1 April 2008 it will be OK in Victoria to carry folding bikes on trains, trams and buses.

November 08

The draft regulations that we have seen state that the folding bike must be folded down and inside a bag (most models come with one) before entering the train, tram or bus.

The Government received representations from the Retail Cycle Traders Australia in they which argued for the adoption of the standard orginially developed in Queensland.

Bicycle Victoria rejected this standard as it is clearly too restrictive and discriminates against some of the obvious folding bike brands that proved highly successful elsewhere such as Birdie and Dahon.

We have recommended the Government adopt the superior standard.

We understand that the RCTA has since endorsed our recommendation.
