Freeway cycling

Cycling is only permitted on the shoulders of some parts of rural freeways (not urban sections) and is not permitted on urban freeways.

 

Urban freeways

In metropolitan Melbourne cycling is not permitted on urban freeways. However there are usually alternatives that cyclists can use such as arterial roads or shared paths. We have listed some of the shared paths near freeways.

 The freeways that ban cycling are:

  • Deer Park Bypass
  • Western Ring Road (cyclists can use Western Ring Path)
  • Northern Ring Road (cyclists can use Western Ring Path)
  • Craigieburn Bypass (cyclists can use shared path alongside)
  • Eastern Freeway (cyclists can use the Yarra Trail & Koonung Trail)
  • Tullamarine Freeway (cyclists can use the Moonee Ponds Ck Trail)
  • Monash Freeway (cyclists can use the Gardiners Ck Trail & Scotchmans Ck Trail)
  • West Gate Freeway (cyclists can use the Yarra Punt or Footscray Road Path)
  • Mornington Peninsula Freeway (cyclists can use the Bay Trail/Longbeach Trail)
  • Princes Freeway to Werribee and City Link (cyclists can use Federation Trail)
  • Calder Fwy between Keilor and City (cyclists can use the Maribyrnong River Trail)
  • Princes Fwy west of Bessie Ck Rd, Nar Nar Goon.

Rural freeways

Cyclists are permitted to use the shoulder of most rural freeways. This includes the Hume Freeway, Calder Freeway and Western Freeway. Take care when crossing exit and entry ramps.
