Water main pain in Chapel Street
18 March 2010. Sections of the Chapel Street bike lane will be blocked off until October while the 150 year old, large cast iron water main is replaced.
Most of the main is on the east side of the street so city bound commuters will not be seriously effected. By the time of the evening commute work will be shut down for the day.
Works will be conducted in temporary zones of approximately 60 metres at a time. Once pipeline renewal is complete in one zone, works will be moved to the next location down Chapel Street.
Temporary reinstatement of the asphalt surface will take place once a work zone is complete. When a major section of work is complete a crew will reinstate the road surface and re-mark lines and parking bays.
Some works have been scheduled to occur at night to minimise disruption to traffic flows where possible.
There will be period of disruption when bikes will have to share the middle of the road with cars and trams.
The usual care with bike tyres and tram tracks will need to be taken.
