2 Our purpose and health

About this page

Our ultimate milestone is to make riding a cultural norm so we have 'healthy people in a healthy society'.

There are significant benefits for every individual who takes up bike riding – especially improved physical health, better mental health and a greater sense of well being, fulfilment and happiness.

Other powerful benefits from bike riding include a sense of connectedness and better relationships including new friends, closer neighbours and a sense of belonging.

There is no doubt that More people cycling more often will also make our society healthy.

The 2009 September Health Survey explored the understanding of 2,362 respondents on these issues. The results will be used to shape the work of Bicycle Victoria in getting More People Cycling More Often. The results are summarised in the pages below.

1. Inactivity epidemics and prevention in society

Many respondents said that they would support a strong effort by government and the community to get people to meet the minimum physical activity guidelines.

2. How much physical activity do the riders put together?

The respondents know that bike riding is has been proven to be one of the types of physical activity that prevents disease.

The 2009 September Health Survey

Welcome to Bicycle Victoria's bike riding and health survey.

There is a strong connection between health and bike riding. It is the reason that most people give when we ask why they ride a bike.

Although we ask health related questions in our other surveys we haven't ever run a dedicated bike riding and health survey.

This survey ranges widely across the many connections between bike riding and health. Your views will help us shape what we do for riders and non riders as part of our mission.

There will space to comment at the end of the survey.

A summary of the results of the survey will be available in early October.
