Election Results

At the 2006 Annual General Meeting, held on Monday 13th November, the Board was delighted to welcome back David Levin and Ross Kilborn as returning Board members and equally delighted to welcome onto the Board Ruth Paterson and Liz Delbridge.  The Board also thanked retiring Board member Gabrielle Callahan for her 3 years excellent service on the Board.

Bicycle Victoria thanks all candidates for running in the 2006 Board Election.

Background to the election

Each year three of the nine Bicycle Victoria Board positions fall vacant after the three-year terms expire (unless they resign early).  In 2006 Gabrielle Callahan and David Levin will complete their three-year terms.  Also, Ross Kilborn completes a one-year term having joined the Board in 2005 following the early resignation of Sally Hutchison.  Due to the resignation of Jason den Hollander, there is an additional vacancy for a two-year term.

The remaining current Councillors are James Alexander, Simon Crone, Albie Heintz, David Larsen, and Stuart Orr.

Election Information

A call for nominations was placed in August Ride On and by 5pm on 18 September 2006 we received 7 nominations: Liz Delbridge, Benedict Hughes, Ross Kilborn, Rick Barry, Catherine James, Ruth Paterson, David Levin QC.  (The order of the candidates has been drawn by lot.)

As the number of nominations exceeds the number of positions, a ballot is necessary.  The results will be tallied by Electionz.com, who are appointed by the returning officer for the election.  The 4 candidates with the most votes will be declared elected at the 2006 Annual General Meeting.

All current Members as at 5pm on Monday 18 September 2006 are eligible to vote.  These Members will receive a voting information sheet in the mail, with full instructions on how to vote.

Extended Candidate Statements

The order of the candidates has been drawn by lot
 * = Current Bicycle Victoria Board Member, standing again in 2006

Candidate 1 : Liz Delbridge

As a dietitian, I have an opportunity to promote cycling to individuals on a daily basis.  I also consult to a social marketing company which specialises in campaigns designed to induce voluntary individual behaviour change.

“More people cycling more often” is a classic behaviour change challenge.  The current state of petrol prices, coupled with increased awareness of environmental issues, means now is the perfect time to turn apathy into action – to increase the number of people cycling and improve conditions for current cyclists.  Bicycle Victoria will be pivotal in ensuring this opportunity is not lost.

I commute by bike, and have participated in many BV events as a rider and volunteer, including the Great NZ Bike Ride and Around the Bay.  I appreciate the role of BV and what it offers to members, and would relish the opportunity to contribute to BV’s future success by being elected to the board.

Qualifications
After completing a BSc(Hons) I went on to obtain Masters degrees in Nutrition and Dietetics, and Public Health.  I am currently employed as a research dietitian / study coordinator.  In this role I manage patients with diabetes and obesity who are taking part in clinical trials.  I have a strong interest in the obesity epidemic and am currently completing a PhD (part-time) in weight management.

Benedict has ridden all his life and is a regular cycle commuter and recreational rider including riding with his wife and children, long bunch rides with friends and he has cycle toured throughout Victoria, Australia as well as overseas.

Having been a riding volunteer with the 2003 Great Vic. Bike ride he would enjoy the opportunity to get more involved with this great organization

He believes his experience and enthusiasm can add successfully to the BV Board and its role in leading and growing both BV and cycling in Victoria.

Please feel free to contact Benedict on 0412 559241.

Candidate 3 : Ross Kilborn*

Ross Kilborn is a current Board member, an experienced business person, and long term cyclist, with an interest in the continuing and future success of Bicycle Victoria.

Experienced in general business and sports management, he is a qualified accountant and certified practicing marketer. He is currently CEO of a State sporting association and a regular cycle commuter.

With BV he developed the annual Tour de France breakfast. Ross has ridden bikes all his life and has participated in most BV events and has cycle toured throughout Victoria, Australia and in several overseas countries.

He believes his past experience can add successfully to the BV Board and its role in leading and developing BV and cycling in Victoria.

He can be contacted on 0412 171 666

Governance Experience
Ross is a current Board member having been appointed through the creation of a casual vacancy in 2005. He is experienced in governance having been a director of several proprietary limited companies, the shareholdings of which have included both public & private companies and personal. He is a past fellow of the Chartered Institute of Company Secretaries.  He has sat on the Committees of several community groups and was Chairman of an Industrial Credit Union.

Candidate 4 : Rick Barry

The promotion of cycling is essential for a healthy community: in our workplaces, on our roads and in our homes.

I started cycling as a child, and now ride with my children (our family was profiled in the family issue of Ride On). Times are changing and people don't always grow up these days and buy a car - they grow up and buy a bike. I commute; I've taken part in the GVBR and Around the Bay in a Day; I'm a Cycle Angel on Ride to Work Day; and I'm currently preparing for a major fundraising ride for Oxfam Australia.

But the main experience I'd bring to the board is my 15 years' involvement in the community sector, especially my work with volunteers (the lifeblood of BV).  I work for Volunteering Australia, where I'm the State Coordinator for Victoria and WA for a program encouraging people into volunteering.

Governance Experience
I served on the board of a community kindergarten for three years, including two as President. I also served on the selection panel for the board of a recently established volunteer resource centre. I've been part of inter-agency working groups with community organisations addressing cross-sectoral issues.

My governance experience is in the community sector where boards are accountable and clearly serve their membership or client base. This is what I will bring to Bicycle Victoria.

Candidate 5 : Catherine James

I started riding a bike in my early 50’s and it has changed my life.

I am now a regular commuter by bike, play an active role in my local and workplace BUGs and take part in Bicycle Victoria events. I have promoted cycling, as a speaker, at numerous events. I think it is time for me to extend my work in supporting people to ride a bike more often.

I believe in Bicycle Victoria as a membership based organisation. I would support BV to continually seek and consider the views of members. I have the skills and experience to be an effective member of the board, who would make a positive contribution to the further development of BV as a leading cycling organisation.

As a woman, who has come late to the joys of bike riding, I offer a different perspective to the board.

Governance Experience
My experience with boards of management began in 1992 when I was Secretary of the Queensland Women’s Health Network Inc. Since then I have worked with and for various boards. I have a post graduate qualification in public administration and have extensive management experience. I am currently a senior manager in the Victorian public service.

Candidate 6 : Ruth Paterson

I am keen to work with the board to strengthen Bicycle Victoria’s campaigns, events and growing membership to get more people cycling more often. I support improved facilities in suburbs and workplaces, and safety and bicycle education for all road and path users.

I value cycling as an enjoyable, sustainable and affordable form of recreation and transport. I see improved integration between cycling and public transport to be a key to increasing cycling – particularly in suburban and regional areas. I believe Bicycle Victoria’s work is made stronger by collaboration with other community groups with shared objectives.

The cycling community – and the possibility for all to be involved in cycling – should be celebrated, supported and encouraged in its diversity. I offer a fresh perspective to the board to guide Bicycle Victoria to a stronger future.

Board and corporate governance experience
I hold a MA in Governance and Development, have worked in government and non-government organisations, and have been actively involved in numerous community organisations including bicycle user groups.  I have strong communication and facilitation skills and am interested in using my skills and experience for the benefit of all cyclists.

Candidate 7 : David Levin QC*

I would be delighted to continue my work on the Board of BV if the members wish me to do so.  I regard my greatest achievement whilst on the BV Board over the last 3 years to have been able to assist in the drafting of the new Constitution which was passed at the AGM in late 2005.

I have given up two directorships at the Bar, as alternate director of the Bar Superannuation Fund and as director of Barristers’ Chambers Ltd to allow me to concentrate on BV.

Whilst a board member of BV I have maintained my active interest in cycling.  I participated in both the GNZBR and GWABR.  In both rides I did my best to meet other cyclists and listen to their concerns and suggestions.  I have also continued my involvement in Wigs on Wheels, the legal fraternity’s 115 member BUG.

Board and Corporate Governance Experience
M.A. (Cantab). Barrister for 34 years, Queen’s Counsel for 9 years specialising in commercial law.  Formerly alternate director of the Bar Superannuation Fund and a director of Barristers’ Chambers Ltd.  Member or Chair of several Bar committees.
